Nerja and its surroundings. Nerja is an eminently tourist population, but until a few years ago the foundation of its economy was agriculture, which still is the 2nd productive force in the
locality.
The municipality located on the Costa del Sol, in Malaga province 50 km from the capital, 106 km. Granada. It’s opposite the Moroccan coast. Within
its city there is a second important group of population, Maro, just 4 km where are located the incomparable Nerja Caves.
Nerja
is a town of great beauty which emphasizes, above all, the Balcony of Europe, ancient tower guards, named by King Alfonso XII. Nerja was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1884, making it
impossible to find an old, yet still survive a few fishermen's houses, especially in the district of Maro.
It is worth visiting:
"Cueva de Nerja, Nerja caves: temple of the wilderness about three thousand years until its discovery in late 1950. Magnificent
stalactites.
Hermitage Our Lady of Sorrows: paintings of the Granada school, seventeenth century.
-Parroquia Del Salvador: data from the late seventeenth century emphasizes the square tower and octagonal bell tower rests on it,
coffered Mudejar and Baroque altarpiece.
-Frigiliana: Just 7 km from Nerja, dating back to Roman times, but not until the Arab period when buying its urban character. Set on
the slopes of mountains Almijara, as if it were a balcony, offers one of the most spectacular and beautiful panoramic of the Costa del Sol
Besides the overall attractiveness of them exist in places of great interest as the Higuerón Sickles and buildings such as the sugar mill, which produces the famous
molasses, which was once the Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana.
Frigiliana found in a number of skilled craftsmen working in their shops with all kinds of materials, from the most common as mud and timber to the curious as the gourds of water, through the glass, leather and esparto . The textile cooperative "Looms of Frigiliana" manufactures all types of carpets and rugs with the same craftsmanship and materials used by weavers for centuries.
